The National Association of Hispanic Nurses believes joining the Sister Study is a powerful way to honor your sister. Do something that will make a difference by helping find the causes of breast cancer.Women are joining in this effort in the hope that future generations, including our daughters, granddaughters and nieces will be spared.
The Sister Study — conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, one of the National Institutes of Health of the US Department of Health and Human Services — is a nationwide effort to learn how our environment and genes affect the chances of getting breast cancer. More than 33,000 women have already enrolled and while that sounds like many women, only about 1,000 of these women are Latinas. We need thousands more to join TODAY!
You can join the Sister Study if:
Ø Your sister (living, deceased), related to you by blood, had breast cancer
Ø You are between 35 and 74 years old
Ø You have never had breast cancer yourself
Ø You live in the U.S. or Puerto Rico
What about Latinas and Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Latinas and is often diagnosed at a later and more serious stage. It is the leading cause of cancer death among Latinas. The Sister Study hopes to find out why.
How can I help? Latinas, if you are eligible, join today! And, whether or not you are eligible, share this email with other women in your extended family and circle of friends. As a Latina nurse, you have the ability to reach many women who could make a difference in this research. You may help by distributing free brochures and other recruitment materials.Call to request some today. If you help recruit one Latina to join the Sister Study, you will have made a significant contribution toward finding the causes of breast cancer!
